Breakdown for Hatchet 3 (Decker Shado movie review)

Hatchet 3 (2013) is the third horror film in the Hatchet Series. It is a story about Victor Crowley, his murderous rampage through Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. The film features Kane Hodder as Victor Crowley, Brian Quinn as Deputy Winslow, as well as Rileah Vanderbilt as Misty.

The film's main strength is its use of practical special effects. Hatchet 3 is a horror movie that uses CG effects in a lesser degree than others. Hatchet 3 has a number of makeup effects that are practical and sets that result in some really horrific scenes throughout the film.

The cast is solid, with Kane Hodder proving to be an formidable villain. The dialogue is hilarious and tongue-in cheek that it can feel like a classic '80s horror movie. There are also some truly humorous moments that provide an entertaining contrast to the heartbreaking violence.

The problem is that the budget is so limited (reportedly one million dollars) the majority of locations used that are featured in the movie are reused locations from previous films in series. For example the exact boathouse location was featured twice within the movie. Many (blog post) of these locations seem like they were reused from previous films from this series. Hatchet or Hatchet II may be able to recognize it as familiar, which can lead to the film feeling almost too familiar.

Overall, Hatchet 3 was an enjoyable series. I liked the gory thrills it provided as well as the engaging performances by the actors.
